The Indianapolis Raceway Festival was held on September 9, 1972 at Bush Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Originally planned for Raceway Park in Hendricks County, but was blocked by a judge after county officials expressed opposition. Concert promoter Dave Lucas scrambled to place the 12-hour concert in Hamilton County but found the show was equally unwelcome there. With one day to spare, Bush Stadium (former home of the Indianapolis Indians) rescued the event.

“They’re opposed to it just because it’s rock music and will attract lots of long-haired people," Lucas told IndyStar in reaction to being banned in Hendricks County.

The show featured Chuck Berry, Fleetwood Mac, It's A Beautiful Day, The Siegel Schwall Band, Argent, McKendree Spring, Flash, Pure Food & Drug Act with Harvey Mandel & Sugarcane Harris, Danny O'Keefe, Foghat & Limousine
