May 24, 1970 Dankovich Farm, Newton Falls, Ohio

The Piper Rock Festival was originally scheduled first for Akron (Peace) Park, and the Nelson Ledges Racetrack before, after over 10,000 tickets were sold, the City Of Akron got a restraining order against the promoters of the show. So the promoters of the show went on a search to find a suitable location to hold the concert without letting the authorities know where it would take place. They finally found a place at the Louis Lightner farm in Newton Falls about an hour from Akron near Youngstown. So worried the same thing would happen to them again they actually waited until the day before the show to announce the new location.

Apparently the festival was a mud bath with constant rain the previous night and into the day of the festival. Some bands including The Byrds, refused to play fearing electricution. The festival ended with a long jam session after yet another injuction arrived and the state police said they were shutting down the festival when the current band, Pig Iron, finished, so in the end members of Canned Heat and Cold Blood simply joined Pig Iron on stage jamming mainly Canned Heat songs for a couple of hours.

Artists appearing: The Rascals (cancelled), Canned Heat, The Byrds (who refused to go on for fear of getting electrocuted), Cold Blood, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, Glass Harp, Pig Iron Blues Band, Alice Cooper, Smith, Marble Cake, Purple Image
