notes: After ‘Animal’ Ed comments that the name of the venue is the San Diego Sports Arena, but that he questions why it’s called that, there aren’t any sports here. He says that he and Matt used to watch bands there growing up, that they never saw a sporting event. After ‘Rival,’ Ed says, “Stone wrote that song, and it should be nicknamed “growing up gay in Littleton … that’s Columbine … the next song is pre-Columbine and it’s something I read about.” ‘Soon Forget’ is prefaced with the comment: “This is as close as we’re going to get to Hawaii this tour, so we might as well break out the ukulele.” At the end of ‘Immortality,’ Ed comments that they were fortunate to play to with Matt, and Matt’s playing with them is a significant thought, and the next song is ‘Insignificance.’ ‘Don’t Be Shy’ is a Cat Stevens cover. Before playing it, Ed says that it’s nice to be in a place that he used to call home, and he said he’d been talking with a friend and that it had been a rough year, and that this song that he was about to sing was a tool that he had used to get out of feeling depressed or bad. ‘Elderly Woman’ is prefaced with, “Small Town was written for the old people who were pissed off and had angst, because Ten dealt with young people who had angst.” Finally, Ed calls the audience “fucking lucky bastards” to live in San Diego, and that he hopes the waves are good tomorrow, since they are taking Supergrass surfing. The polaroid makes its return at the second encore. Mike’s amp goes out in the middle of Ledbetter for 10 seconds. Matt had some snare problems and they switched out his snare probably 3 or 4 times, 1 of which caused a small delay in the set. Mike was once again really hamming it up for the crowd. Stone had a really good show and did some great Stone chicken head bobbing. Matt was 'clearly' playing for a hometown crowd – not showing off per se, but really rocking hard for his homies. Great hometown show.
