1962
During the Fall and Winter of 1962, Eric Clapton, sometimes accompanied by guitarist Dave Brock, played in the folk pubs, clubs and coffeehouses around Kingston-upon-Thames and Richmond-upon-Thames. Confirmed venues include The Crown in Kingston and L’Auberge in Richmond.
1963
From January to August 1963 Eric joined his first formal band. Originally called Rhode Island Red and the Roosters, this was quickly shortened to the Roosters. Rehearsing at the Prince of Wales in New Malden, The Roosters played private parties and 13 or 14 gigs primarily in Greater London. Venues included the Carfax Ballroom in Oxford, the Ricky-Tick Clubs in Kingston, Reading, West Wickham and Windsor, the Wooden Bridge Hotel in Guildford, The Jazz Cellar in Kingston, The Scene in Ham Yard, Soho, Uncle Bonnie’s Chinese Jazz Club in Brighton and the Marquee club in London.

In September 1963, Eric Clapton joined the Liverpool band Casey Jones and the Engineers, playing seven gigs in the Liverpool area, over several weeks on the Northern Beat and cabaret circuit. The first show was at the Civic Hall in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Performances followed at The Oasis and the Belle Vue Amusement Park, both in Manchester and in Reading, Berkshire, together with the Undertakers. At the Civic Hall and The Oasis gigs, The Engineers were also required to back cabaret singer Polly Perkins.
Brian Casser began using the stage name "Casey Jones" with this band. Casser led the first notable beat group in Liverpool, Cass & The Cassanovas. Following the band's demise, he formed Casey Jones & the Engineers and later, as leader of Casey Jones & the Governors, became successful in Germany in the mid-1960s achieving six top 40 singles.
In October 1963, Eric Clapton joined The Yardbirds.

1964
In 1964, The Yardbirds spent most of the year touring the clubs in the London area. In the month of July they had a hotel engagement in Lugano, Switzerland, followed by several other club appearances in the London area, again. They played at the 2nd Scottish Jazz and Blues Festival and the 4th National Jazz and Blues Festival. On 18th September, the Yardbirds began a package tour with Billy J. Kramer, Cliff Bennett and the Nashville Teens. These would consist of a headline act with five or six support artists. They would perform their lastest single and perhaps one other number and then they were off. After a second package tour they ended the year as the opening act on the Beatles' Christmas concerts.
