September 20, 1867 Colston Hall, Bristol, ENG (Opening night. The very first event was a public meeting of the London Missionary Society. The place was packed with around 3,400 people, most of whom were probably there to get a good look at the new place rather than to listen to reverend gentlemen talking about the importance of spreading the Gospel. Nonetheless, there were hymns, a choir and soloists and everyone pronounced themselves impressed by the acoustic qualities of the hall)

September 1 1898 In the early hours Colston Hall was destroyed in what was said to be the biggest fire Bristol had seen since the 1831 riots. The shell of the building was all that remained, with the fire spreading to the roof of the Hall, which was quickly destroyed, along with its expensive organ.

November 1900 the hall re-opens with grand ceremony and concert

1914 The Hall was turned into a recruiting centre and used as a temporary billet for Scots soldiers during winter 1914-15

November 11, 1919 The hall is purchased by Bristol’s Corporation for £65,000 and would henceforth be run by a Council Committee.

1922 Evangelist Captain Gypsy Smith packs in 11,000 people in three separate meetings in a single day.

November 24 1940 British Legion’s annual Festival of Remembrance. During the show the first really big air raid hit Bristol and the building was evacuated.

February 5 1945 The hall went up in flames early one Monday morning due to a carelessly discarded cigarette.

July 7, 1951 The Duke of Gloucester opens the re-built Hall, as part of Bristol’s contribution to the Festival of Britain celebrations. The Duke of Gloucester officiated at the opening ceremony, which was followed by a concert from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham.

January 18, 1956 Colston Hall, Bristol, ENG (Colston Hall commemorates the installation of the new Harrison & Harrison organ, nearly five years after the rebuilt auditorium opened. The opening ceremony was presided by Bristol’s Lord Mayor Alderman Harry Crook, and organist George Thalben-Ball performed the first concert on the instrument.

Between performances, his fans surged around Colston Hall and brought traffic to a standstill until police reinforcements arrived. During the last number, fans rushed to the stage until the star disappeared among the crowd and the band’s instruments were passed to safety over the heads of the crowd. The star’s manager was quoted in the press as saying the Bristol gig had been the most fantastic reception they had ever had anywhere in the country)

In April 1960, a Bristol married couple credited the Hall and the concert given by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for bringing harmony back to their marriage. They wrote to the conductor about how they had decided to get married at the orchestra’s last appearance at Colston Hall two years previously and how listening to the performance avoided a break-up.
